MOTIVATION
WHAT IS MOTIVATION? NO, IM SERIOUS, CAN SOME ONE EMAIL ME AND LET ME
KNOW WHAT IT IS? JUST KIDDING!
MOTIVATION IS NOT NECESSARY THE REASON WHY ME MOVE TONS OF WEIGHT,
NOR IT IS THE REASON WE DIET. MOTIVATION IS WHAT HELPS US ACHIEVE OUR
GOALS, AND GET THAT LAST REP IN. I’M SURE EVERYBODY USES DIFFERENT
TECHNIQUES AS TOOLS OF MOTIVATION. ITS PROBABLY WIDE SPREAD ENOUGH
THAT IT IS AS INDEPENDENT AS A FINGER PRINT. THERE’S PROBABLY MANY
APPROACHES. LET IT BE UNDERSTOOD THAT THE TYPE OF MOTIVATION I’M
TALKING ABOUT HERE IS TRAINING. WHAT HELPS US PUSH THE EXTRA 10 POUNDS?
PERSONALLY, I HAVE MANY DIFFERENT LEVELS OF MOTIVATION AND PREPARATION.
I START WITH THE NIGHT BEFORE, ENVISIONING EVERY EXERCISE AND EVERY REP. I
GO OVER IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN IN MY MIND, RIGHT UP UNTIL BEDTIME. AND
WHEN IM NOT DREAMING OF A DOZEN WOMEN FAWNING OVER ME, I’M DREAMING
OF THE TORTURE THAT IS YET TO COME. THAT’S BASICALLY THE “FIRST LEVEL” OF
PREP. WHEN I ARISE IN THE MORNING, AND AS I PREPARE MY FOOD, I THINK OF A
POSITIVE AND A NEGATIVE AT THE SAME TIME. I KNOW IT SOUNDS CRAZY, BUT I DO!
THE POSITIVE THOUGHT WOULD BE ALONG THE LINES OF: “IM GOING TO BREAK
THAT PERSONAL RECORD TODAY, THE WEIGHT IS GOING TO SEEM LIGHT”. THE
NEGATIVE THOUGHT OFTEN SOUNDS LIKE THIS: “IM NOT BIG ENOUGH, IM NOT
STRONG ENOUGH ETC..”.
I USE THOSE THOUGHTS TO MY ADVANTAGE. THE POSITIVE THOUGHT IS THE
DRIVING FORCE TO GO TO THE GYM AND BREAK THOSE PERSONAL RECORDS, THE
NEGATIVE THOUGH IS A REMINDER THAT I CANNOT GIVE UP, WITH MY LAST AND
DYING BREATH, I CANNOT GIVE UP, THAT’S THE ONLY WAY TO GROW.
I LISTEN TO THE HARDEST ROCK ON THE WAY TO THE GYM, I BLOCK OUT ANY
MONEY PROBLEMS OR NAGGING WIFE ISSUES, THIS IS MY TIME. NO ONE ELSE IS
GOING TO DO THIS BUT YOUR SELF. I MAKE SURE THAT THE LAST SONG I HERE
BEFORE OPENING MY CAR DOOR IS ENERGIZING ME. I WILL NOT LEAVE THAT CAR
AFTER LISTENING TO A STUPID COMMERCIAL OR SO FOURTH.
YEA I KNOW…. IM A GOOF BALL, BUT AT LEAST I’M HONEST AND DON’T WEAR MY
“LUCKY SOCKS” OR “FAVORITE UNDERWEAR”, HEHEEHE.
ENTERING THE GYM, THAT FIRST FEW SECONDS, YOU CAN TELL. IT’S IN THE AIR.
THIS WILL BE YOUR DAY.
THE FIRST THING I DO IS LOOK AROUND, AND TAKE IT IN. GET IT OVER WITH. SEE
WHO IS TRAINING AND WHAT THERE DOING. I BELIEVE THIS IS IMPORTANT TO GET
OUT OF YOUR SYSTEM, BECAUSE WHILE TRAINING, THERE IS NO OTHER SOUL. IT’S
THE EQUIPMENT AND ME. IT’S SO VERY HARD TO LIFT WITHOUT LOOKING AROUND.
WE AS HUMANS ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR OUTSIDE APPROVAL, AND THIS
SITUATION IS NO DIFFERENT. TRY TO RESIST IT. WHEN YOU FEEL THE URGE TO
SHOW BOAT, FIGHT IT! I CLOSE MY EYES AND SAY “YOUR ALL ALONE, THERE IS
NOBODY HERE”. IT WORKS, ITS LIKE EVERYTHING GETS BLACK EXCEPT FOR THE
BAR, WHAT YOU GOT TO DO IS PERFECTLY CLEAR.
THE OTHER TECHNIQUE I USE IS SORT OF LIKE A RHYTHMIC OR TIMING TECHNIQUE.
THIS IS ACTUALLY HARD TO EXPLAIN, BUT ILL GIVE IT A SHOT. I’M FAIRLY SURE THAT
IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE BRAIN WAVES. BRAIN WAVES CHANGE WHEN
WE ARE AT THE MOST CONCENTRATED STATE, I CANT REMEMBER IF IT TURNS
FROM ALPHA TO BETA OR BETA TO ALPHA TYPE WAVES, BUT IT DOES CHANGE. IT’S
IMPORTANT TO APPROACH THE BAR AT THE POINT OF UTMOST CONCENTRATION.
NOW YOU CAN SEE WHY I MENTIONED THE FACT THAT OUTSIDE INFLUENCE CAN
AFFECT YOUR LIFTS. YOU COULDN’T POSSIBLE FALL INTO THIS DEEP
CONCENTRATION WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY THINKING ABOUT THE OTHER HEAVY
LIFTER IN THE GYM. YOU MAY THINK BEFORE HAND THAT YOU WANT TO BETTER
YOUR LIFTS COMPARABLY WITH HIS AS PREPARATION MOTIVATION, BUT RIDING
THAT “WAVE” REQUIRES ABSOLUTE THOUGHT OF WHAT YOUR ABOUT TO DO.
